COSMIC EQUATION

Then another tomorrow
They never told me of
Came with the abruptness of a fiery dawn
And spoke of Cosmic Equations:
The equations of sight-similarity
The equations of sound-similarity
Subtle Living Equations
Clear only to those
Who wish to be attuned
To the vibrations of the Outer Cosmic Worlds.
Subtle living equations of the outer-realms
Dear only to those
Who fervently wish the greater life

...A Mix of BlackForrestry: End of Summer 2011...

I had plans to post this mix much earlier than this, but I just didn't have the steam to do it. I received the motivation I needed by watching the Richard Hugo video that Doug posted (see previous post). A flood of images and feelings swamped my mind as I watched it...images like the ones from the documentary Harlan County USA (a film that Doug turned me on to...if you haven't figured it out, Mr. Cooper is a constant source of inspiring ideas), and the same emotions that fill me when I hear the music of Blaze Foley. Anyway, it's these same sort of thoughts that birthed this mix. A lot of these songs also put me in that same head space...some more than others. Regardless of the effect that they have on me, hopefully they will have an enjoyable one on you.

01 The Band- Crossing The Great Divide 2:01
02 Buffalo Springfield- Kind Woman 4:08
03 Steve Young- That's How Strong My Love Is 3:34
04 Freddie Scott- I Shall Be Released 2:39

06 Damien Jurado- Cloudy Shoes 3:58
07 Holy Sons- Reckless Liberation 3:58
08 Arian Calandra- Track 10 4:25
09 Bart Davenport- A Young One 3:06
10 Jim Sullivan- Highways 2:39
11 Delaney And Bonnie- We Can Love 2:18
12 Ron Cornelius- I've Lost My Faith In Everything But You 3:17
13 Tony Joe White- Aspen Colorado 2:39
14 Jonathan Wilson- Gentle Spirit 5:42
15 Bonnie Prince Billy- New Wonder 4:06
16 Blaze Foley- Picture Cards Can't Picture You 4:00

...R.I.P. Trish Keenan...

Trish Keenan (1968-2011)

This past Friday, Trish Keenan, the lead singer of the band Broadcast, past away after struggling with pneumonia and its complications for the past couple of weeks. Whether you are familiar or unfamiliar with the 42 year olds' music, check out Broadcast's excellent live recording from back in 2000 entitled Black Session... http://www.mediafire.com/?22gwc9c686cygud. I found it over at Aquarium Drunkard. Check it out.

Also, I posted a mixtape below that Trish recently made for her friend, David Brewster. Here's the original post describing the context for the mixtape:

“Trish Keenan from Broadcast passed away on Friday 14th January 2011, she was an amazing, talented woman and will be missed by many.
In December 2010 Trish sent me a mix CD she compiled, I never thanked her. Its called Mind Bending Motorway Mix and I want to share it with you, please pass the link on, share it far and wide, its a little tribute to a (as a friend referred to her today) exhilarating woman.
Sorry I don’t have a tracklist and to be honest I like it that way. I think its less about who you’re listening to on this compilation and more about the fact you are listening to something that Trish took time to select and compile for me and in turn yourselves. Please just enjoy the music.
I would send stuff to Trish every now and then and she would send bits back to me (I have a pile of films about witches that inspired the last lp with Focus Group still to watch). The last thing she sent me was this mix and the Ghost Box 7 inch with Focus Group. It was a lovely gift and my friends and I listened to it on our way to ATP in December. Anyway I was rubbish, crap excuse of being busy and moving home (but how much time does a text message take?) so I never thanked her for it until last Sunday, by which time she would have been in hospital. I’m sure she knows how much I appreciated the CD and reading everyones reactions to it has been overwhelming, she touched so many lives. I miss her and will continue to do so for a long time, but my thoughts are with James and Trish’s family, I can’t imagine what they are going through. Never miss an opportunity to say thank you or I love you because you’ll never get that moment back.”

Give this great music a listen.....

...A Mix of BlackForrestry: SPIRIT...

It's been a while since I posted anything...I have been pretty busy lately. Amidst the holidays, purchasing and moving into a new house, working, and spending time with the family, I have not had an excess of time. Needless to say, I haven't had much time to do any projects. The most I have been able to do is draw in my sketchbook on my lunch breaks at work and when I have a few spare minutes while we're out running errands. So, even though they're not much, here are my glorified doodles. Along with them is a mix that I slapped together...not exactly what I had hoped for, but it will have to do. <{cold horizons}-{a mixtape}>

{three}
at the prospect of the coming months
i rub my feet together like two sticks
i should probably strip the tree of tinsel this afternoon
toss it’s dead, dry body into the shallow snow beyond the plow drifts
maybe clear a path to the barn
but it’s likely i won’t
i can feel the weight of that tree just looking at it
can feel the labor of it in my heart
once again the cold horizon calls to me thru the curtains
as the old furnace issues another cough
the house creaking
rattling from one end to the other like a shiver in the spine
man is wood tough!
oh God how i wish i was as tough as a tree
strong & upright
i feel like a bent birch
cold & heavy like a snow bank
dark as night
there’s time yet i suppose for me to take up my tree
it would likely do me good to get out
walk the length of the road to the mailbox
let my eyes tear up with wind
take in the cutting air like a winston
sure as sundown, it would do me good
and surely i’ve got a mind to do it
but i’ve minded these things before

mixcloud: fluid radio

i've been meaning to look into this "mixcloud" business for a while now. i come across there widgets on certain blogs and am always impressed with what i see & hear. i'm still reading up on the details, but basically it's a place on the web where poeple can create a radio station that plays full, uninterupted radio shows that people can stream (not download). these are basically mixtapes and they can be embedded on blogs and elsewhere in the form of some pretty nifty widgets as seen below. Fluid Radio is one mixcloud radio station with many dj's making radioshows/mixes. Everything i've come across of theirs so far has been really good - a good blend of ambient stuff & folk stuff for the most part. i've been listening to both lately, so three cheers for Fluid Radio! This is a very chill, folk driven mix i was listening to for the first time this morning & it sounds great. It's from a dj/musician by the name of Nils Frahm. if you like this Sibylle Baier tune i'll be including it on a forthcoming mix that i've been intending to put up for some time now. enjoy. doug

...{the end is at hand}-{Jesus music, vol. 1}...

If you enjoy rare, psychedelic music...or if you enjoy "Jesus Music"...or if, like me (& Doug), you can get down with both, then, boy oh boy, do we have a post for you.

You may not know it, but Doug and I have been brewing up this little treat for a while. In our never-ending search through music of all types, but especially psychedelic and folk music, we kept bumping into these great, almost unheard of records- albums from the Jesus People Movement of the 1960's and 70's. Although some of the tunes from that movement may have had a cheesy quality to them, there's some really interesting stuff that came out of that period and subculture as well. As much as Doug and I love making mixes, upon discussion, we realized that we had never made a comprehensive mix of songs from this category. So, we decided to work cooperatively to make this compilation for you to enjoy. If you have any interest in "outsider" music, then I think you'll find these tracks to be pretty engaging.

While putting this together, we discovered that we have a bunch more stuff to share, so this will be the first volume, with several more to follow sometime in the future. These posts are intended to turn people on to these obscure artists. If you like what you hear, feel free to check out the following link to support the artist by purchasing a recording: http://www.one-way.org/jesusmusic.

Also, keep your eyes peeled at your local record stores. Many labels are re-issuing rare, outsider, records, like these, as the interest in them increases. Let us know what you think. Dig? Want more........................... Get Volume 2...

...A Mix of BlackForrestry- End of Summer 2010 mixtape 1...

So, I love mixes- tapes, CDs, downloads, whatever. I enjoy exposing new artists and creating a new found respect for old acts. There's just something about hearing a song bumped up against other random songs. It can be like hearing it for the first time- even if you've heard it hundreds of times before. I am constantly compiling new mixes in my head, and more often than not, I am working on a project to get music into the hands of the people within my sphere of influence. That leads to this post. As I was working on my latest mix, I had this bright idea- I should post the music on this blog. This would save me the time of burning multiple CDs for multiple people, and it would make the music accessible to more people, and they could download it at their leisure, while checking out bands' websites. It sounded like a Win/Win situation to me. So, this is my very first attempt at posting music on a blog. If everything goes well, you should be able to download the mix from a link below. Wish me luck......and enjoy.....
